  • Dungeons & Dragons Next (or 5th Edition)

Just curious, how many of you have sampled D&D Next, yet?

I downloaded the Basic Rules and bought the limited-content starter box-set a couple of weeks back, and I was pleasantly surprised with most of the changes. The stream-lined, simplified skill-list was my favorite part. I like that they brought some of the best ideas that Pathfinder implemented. And Backgrounds. I've always thought the Background mechanic was sorely underdeveloped, and I'm happy to see it fit in for purposes of both role play, and roll play.

What I wasn't entirely thrilled about was the single-stat static bonus progression to everything. BAB, Skill Ranks--everything. But I understand it. And, begrudgingly, I have to admit it's a good idea; especially for retaining the new market brought in by fourth edition. Magic, to me, is more OP then ever. But as a DM, I've always stressed to players that limiting your enemy's magic capabilities while maximizing your own is just good tactics.

But, anywho, I'm interested in your experiences with it. Got anything?

    Anyone? Anyone?

    Played the playtest of it.

TLDR: Feels like a mix of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition, and I will be interesting to play a game with the full rule set.

I'm holding off on any judgments until the full rule set comes out. (All three of the core books).

I did like what I saw in the free PDF, though. I really enjoyed the background and personality sections.

Perhaps when some more comes out, we can get a Sundren one shot going to preview the system for people who are interested.

I too got to taste it during a playtest at one of my local gaming stores. Nets were OP. I'll need to check if they revised that silliness based on our feedback.

Take a part of 4 people. Each throw a net at the same opponent until someone lands. Everyone gets Advantage. Opponent is stuck unless they pass a check. Repeat.

Oooh, magic is overpowered again?! I need to take a look at this!

Lets not forget that magic was overpowered, or at least semi-useful in 2nd edition too...

If someone cast a 10d6 fireball it would actually make people run for cover, and 20d6 fireball pretty much meant your ass was grass.

Yes, I realise my RP writing sucks. Just be thankful I keep it short

Don't forget the super bouncy ultra fun lightning bolts. So many deaths.
But please, keep one thing in mind for me. What have you become when even nightmares fear you?

To me, this is balanced, not OP. Anything that enables the many to actually use their numbers against the few, I'm all for.

There was more to it that I don't recall. It's been over 6 months since I participated in that one-shot. It was indeed exceedingly effective though. Also the nets were infinite use.

My copy of the new Player's Handbook arrived today. So far, I like what I see. Can't wait to get a solid game going.

A buddy of mine gave me the nitty gritty on 5th's paladins. I really want to recreate my LN paladin now.
