  • Space Games, Fuck Yeah!

Very cool game, I'd recommend it if you're considering it. Just $20, it's very artistic and sad - a side-scrolling Final Fantasy combat system.

    * Edit - changing the title to match the derailment. Likely, this just means yall will switch topics again.

Ahh yes, a classic. I remember '97-'98 like it was yesterday. Playing that game at 9 years old truly left a good impression RPG's in me.

You'll need a heavy amount of mods to reduce 3/4ths of the game's traffic to prevent heavy lag + an overhaul of some of the game's scripting to prevent blatant bug issues, but if your rig can handle the game (and perhaps more importantly - if you can bear that it still isn't fully fixed yet), I'd say it's worth it. I'm biased though, since I really enjoy space-based games.

Hrmm. On one hand, that seems pretty tempting. On the other: I get to play in my Super-Hornet next Thursday.

My problem with space-sims originates from the fact that too many people are playing KSP, and not enough people are actually getting craft into space to make it a reality.

Did they release that Homeworld graphics update yet?
            *meanders off to perpetuate problem*

Lookup a game in alpha called Flagship, you control a capital ship in first person perspective (RTS) on a hologram grid and get to watch your ships pulverize things around you.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I run x-rebirth smoothly and i have to say the game looks beautiful but it isnt fun. The learning curve is very steep and the ai doesnt seem very smart. You are also stuck in the ship you begin with, unlike other x games where you get to buy and pilot bigger and better ships. Also the space combat isnt very fun either, it seems more mechanical than it is fun blasting other ships. I had a lot more fun playing old games like wing commander. At least the space combat was fun. I guess this game could be fun if you have patience to build a trading empire and then a fleet. But i didnt even get that far, and im not even sure you can do it in the X game.

Mmm... Space games. The prevalence of over simplified WW2 dogfight style mechanics pisses me off though!

I want my spaceship-fighting to be complex, confusing, nauseating and over in a matter of seconds. I want proper physics and having to think about things like 'Well, the ship could do this snazzy turn, but I might reduce the crew who haven't made it to crash couches to a disgusting mess of meat on the nearest bulkhead'

And why the fuck can I not use my engines as a weapon in these games? I mean half the time you've got engines that can throw hysterical amounts of thrust out the back end yet your biggest IG worry is another little pissy craft getting on your tail. I mean what's the point in having these fucking giant nuclear lances wodging out the back of your space-toy if you can't actually use the fact that they're giant fucking nuclear lances as a weapon.

Watch what happens to things caught in the jet wash of a plane applying thrust, think about how much more thrust your average 'space fighter' is laying down in order to manouver or accelerate. WHY THE FUCK DOES IT DO NOTHING?!

Out of pew-pew juice? Just point thrust candle at enemy, set accelerate to maximum and chuckle.

I do like FTL though, that's well worth buying.

X-Rebirth has something of an annoyance in that department, too. While the flight mechanics are pretty much what you've described, what's more annoying to me is a complete lack of the implementation of Newton's 1st Law - if I accelerate to maximum using my super-special boosters, there's no reason I should revert to pre-booster velocities (unless the Albion Skunk has some sort of special braking system implemented, but I call BS on that one).

In a futuristic space-sim (like EVE Online, for example) where you can literally park hundreds of kilometers next to the corona of a class O or class B star, the destructive power of ship thrusters is just abysmally lulzy. Despite not involving the extremely destructive properties of solar winds on spacecraft (and living tissue, nonetheless) and solar flares/prominences that could completely engulf even the largest ship available, it's pretty damn insane. If you have a ship that can withstand that, you can easily withstand the back-end output of a ship. The biggest issue you would probably face (assuming the game has Newton's 3rd Law implemented) is that you'd just be pushed backwards. If the size difference between the ships was monstrous, you might have a good case for being able to get away.

But what happens if they maneuver to the side?

Back to the primary topic of discussion, I'm always disappointed that the other alternative of using your engines as weapons rarely works. There is no weapon more powerful than throwing rocks at people, or alternatively manned fighters.
Fortunately, I can do that now.
