  • Totally random awesomeness from where I live

I have to say, I simply love where I live. I do. Especially when stuff like this happens:

That's only a few miles from my house.

We get a lot of that here in Colorado Springs too. Well not so much Elk, but Mule Deer and Bears with an occasional Mountain Lion thrown in to keep you on your toes!

I can't remember exactly when it was that they began to reintroduce elk back into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but the effort has been a huge success. We have no mountain lions around here, but encounters with bears and coyotes is common. Where I live, I can hear a pack of coyotes calling to one another almost every night.

And, of course, there is an abundance of white tail deer. Everywhere. Eeeeverywhere.

2001. Next time I return home I'll have to make it a point to see that. I love the National Parks. I have seeing the Buffalo in Yellowstone on my list.

In Iowa we see lots of furry creatures. The 98% majority of what you see is spread across: Skunks, Possums, Racoons, and Deer. Which sucks, because 3 of the 4 are smelly garbage diggers.. And damn if those deer aren't sneaky. You never see them UNTIL YOU HIT THEM.

I look one way. I see this. Flat farmland. Feels like it goes on forever. So flat.

But I live in Des Moines, so I turn around and...

Neither bodes well for bigger game. Though deer seem to be hiding bedhind every blade of grass. It's hard to live in Iowa for any length of time without at the very least having a near miss with at least one deer.

Well.. It does rise from an ocean of soy beans and corn.. It is also what.. 600,000 people counting the entire metro area? Not a major US city. However, it does rank as the #1 city in the country for young professionals (by Forbes), and #1 city in the nation to raise a family (again by forbes, as well as ranking 1-3 by several other publications). Just saying.
