  • Graphics card problems

Ok, I'll be down for a bit till I get my graphics card problems resolved.

sundren is the only online game I play so i dont use high end cards. I am currently using a PNY geforce 9800 GT, 1GB card. I keep it clean and have had it about 2 years now and it has always worked great. Recently it started to get hot, so hot that the screen would freeze, I'd get terrible lag and not just online but on the regular NWN2 game. So I went out and got another card. it a NVidia geforce GTX 650, 2GB card. I little bit higher end than the old one (couldnt find the old one like I had, probably dont make them anymore.) Anyways, installed it and nothing.. black screen.
Discovered that it has to have a power cable where as the older one didnt. PLUS it requires a minimum of 400 watt PSU. Mine old Dell has a max 300 watt PSU. It requires a minimum current rate 12v 20 amp. MY PSU is 12v 18 amp. Now Im not a computer expert by any stretch, but if Im correct I need to upgrade the PSU. I know there are a lot of you guys that have tons of knowledge in this area. If you can give any free advice I'd really appreciate it.

My system is a Dell Inspiron 545. 6GB ram Intel Core Duo CPU E7500 @2.93GHz

    thanks in advance.

The video card is pretty good, you will have lots of issues with such a low power PSU, aside from that, you are likely going to have a bottleneck with that dual core CPU as the GPU will be more powerful than what the CPU can keep up with.

I had a PSU go out on me just a few months back and was able to get a 600w with 46amps on the 12v for under $100 at best-buy. The Corsair CX600M modular PSU. It powers my 2x GTX660 ti in SLI just fine. Great value for the money.

I am almost wondering if a new computer upgrade is warranted. With this graphics card, and a newer computer system, you may benefit. That's a what, four or five year old computer?

Out of curiosity, what version of windows do you have installed? If your there are no video drivers available for your new video card on your installed version of windows (I suspect XP?), then a new PS won't help.

I also throw my backing behind the Corsair PSU, for the same reason. The cooling fan on my old ATI card stopped spinning so I upgraded to an NVidia, but realized that it needed more juice than my crappy little Dell could put out. Apparently, Dell loves using cheap ass PSU's, even on their "gaming" rigs. Apart from the problem of trying to cram a lot of unused cables into a tiny case, the PSU exchange was a breeze.

My advice is to try a new PSU and see how it goes. If it turns out like Saulus said that there is a bottleneck from your CPU, you could always try to a) replace the CPU if you find a better one for your mobo b) replace the entire mobo but then you might as well c) build a new PC using the salvage from the old.

I had someone build my last one and I have some regrets, mostly because if I have Mozilla (shut up, Saulus) open my PC starts getting twitchy, then freezes, then I have to hard shutdown...also every time I shutdown it never shuts all the way off and I end up having to use the power button again. And the SSD hard drive he put in was garbage and is now a $200 paperweight. And I can't get tech support. And it hangs for random 10 second stretches when I play NWN2. But it's still better than a Dell.
I can't slow down, I can't hold back though you know I wish I could. No there ain't no rest for the wicked until we close our eyes for good!

Im running Windows 7.. it was the PSU. not giving the new card enough power. upgraded the PSU and it all seems to be working again. However Saulus was dead on, that with a 2.93 GHz CPU, the graphics card is limited to what the CPU can handle. But Im not a hardcore gamer, just here on Sundren and basic internet. So I may have overkilled it, but it works. so Im happy. Thanks everyone.
