  • Slightly Decreased Play Time... and a Gift

I've managed to get my pen and paper group together to play Earthdawn. This means I've got to shift some Sundren Time to planning my own adventures for my group. I'm looking to devote two full weekday evenings to planning and one full day on the weekend to playing and planning. Make full use of the forums for me.

The gift is from the Earthdawn book. It's called the Gift of Theft and I dedicate to River Swift (you're awesome in a can), Daniel Nobody (I miss our deep conversations), and Cazen (He knows a guy who knows Byrun).

"To steal! This is the greatest thrill in existence! To take something that is not meant to be taken, to laugh in the face of foolish rules and laws - all else pales in comparison. Do not let silly sayings about the virtue of hard work and honesty confuse you. Pilfered fruit taste the sweetest, and the gem stolen from the turban of an enraged troll merchant shines brighter than one gifted through toil and sweat!"

    ((skip several paragraphs))

"Well, mark my words, stuffy one: your finery is not armor - it is a cage. Your possessions trap you, weigh you down, stunt the growth of your soul. you have become your possessions, for every one of your hopes has become wrapped up in what you own."

"No! Do not attempt to deny it. There is no shame in this attitude - well, perhaps there is, but it is a shame shared by many denizens of Barsaive. Many Namegivers must claim this common failing; they believe they are what they own. Goods and possessions are thought to attract lovers, win friends, and prove one's value in the world. What lamentable folly! It is your thoughts, your actions, your dreams, your memories that define you and create true worth."

"So when the Thief steals your money, she takes not only your possessions or your coin. She takes your delusions and so gives you truth. Those who do not understand this gift brand us as scoundrels, it is true. Why, some poor benighted souls actually believe stealing is evil! We who follow the Discipline of the Thief simply shrug at such quint notions, for a true Thief does not expect gratitude for her gifts. She gives for the joy of it."

I wanted my Halfling alt to have this kind of philosophy. Also... I DID NOT WRITE THIS. I wish I had that kind of talent. This is somebody else's work and I feel it's just awesome. Take it easy Sundren and see you at least four nights a week.

Hope your group enjoys what you're cooking up for 'em! I can promise that Hellstrom Keep will... at least still be standing. Mostly. >.>

Oh wow, I have always loved Earthdawn. I am excited to see it is still played. Of all the dice games, it was and is my favorite! Good on you for starting a group! I hope you have so much fun with it!

I hope your Earthdawn endeavors fare better than my Cyberpunk 2020 work.

        Either way, have fun ^_^

It's hard getting the group into Role Play. My little brother is kind of a power gamer. Also, in the age of cell phones, I spend time trying to get everybody to focus. My wife is still too shy to say much.

And, yes, I end up doing most of the work, even for character backgrounds, no matter how hard I push.

I will get them into actual Role Playing if it kills me.

Oh, we hang out plenty. We're good friends and we enjoy our time together. As I said, there's only one who's really into power gaming and it's kind of hard to do in Earthdawn. Dumping a stat can get you killed. The way Social Talents and Skills work, dumping Charisma can lower your Social Defense which means an Illusionist or Troubadour can really make you into a play thing.
