  • SSD failed me for the last time!

What does SSD stand for? How about shitty, shitty disk? This is the second time in 3 months this drive has totally blown up on me, this time to the point where my PC does not even acknowledge there is a disk in there. So in under a year I have suffered total PC failure on my old tower, exponential failure on my new one to the point I did a full format/reinstall, and now this FUBAR. I own two devices with SSD and both have hard bizarre little problems I have never seen with a mechanical HD; one is a Macbook and one is my currently dead PC. Luckily, after my start of summer craptastic meltdown, I partitioned the Macbook with a Windows 7 boot, so I can still hop on and play for brief periods of time...on my trackpad.

So why am I ranting and whining? Because it makes me feel better! Also, because I believe in sharing stories, good or bad, about stuff and I have found SSD to be wanting. If you are considering it, I suggest holding off a few more years for all the kinks to get worked out (and price to come down.) If people want to offer rebuttals about how wrong I am, please do so. My experience, though, has been overwhelmingly negative.
I can't slow down, I can't hold back though you know I wish I could. No there ain't no rest for the wicked until we close our eyes for good!

SSD seem to be more susceptible to poor manufacturing (due to the more sophisticated nature of the NAND technology), and thus not all brands are created equal.

I'm curious if you had updated firmware on the SSD or what brand/model you were using. I've only had one fail on me, a first generation SSD after about 3 years of good use.

It's a Crucial V4. And from some of the angry comments I have read on their site, I am not alone in the constant lockup/failure problems when using it as an OS drive. This is partly my fault for letting someone else build my rig (I was too busy with work at the time and a friend of a friend wanted some business) because I would have gone with a better name like Corsair or WD. Oh well, hopefully it's still under warranty so I can at least get another one.

I've heard they don't take kindly to defrags, and Windows 7 defragments in the backgrounds whenevers there be enough procressing power to do it. Depends on how long you have hae it.

Yes that is something else I forgot to mention Farmboy is right. Windows Vista/7 should automatically disable defrag on any SSD drive; however I have seen cases where it doesn't, or it somehow gets re-enabled.

Defragging SSDs kills them. Don't do it. They have their own 'built-in' defrag technology which is different from platter drives.

It's stuff like this that's making me wary of the new machine I want. The thought of loosing the only drive (ssd) makes me afeared.

Well the good news Doubt is that I only installed Windows on the SSD, and maybe some random docs I don't care about terribly. I installed all my games on either the D: drive (640 gb mechanical drive for games, music, and movies) or the H: drive (1 Tb external USB drive for backup, and for some reason all my GoG installs) So losing the C: drive is just a pain in the ass because now I have to reinstall my OS and all the drivers and updates and crap. Once while I was in college my laptop HD died right as I started writing all my finals, so I lost all my stuff from the year (academic and personal) in one blue swoop, and ever since then I have been a fan of redundancies and backups.

So while I want this to be a cautionary tale, I want to reign it in a bit from last night. Having spoken with a number of people, the end story is: brand matters. If you dish out a little extra for a reputable, established company's SSD you will probably not share in my troubles. If you go to NewEgg or TigerDirect and get the cheapest drive you can find, expect to get what you paid for. I'm pretty sure I never defragged it, but I will make sure for next time so at least I learned something. 'cause knowledge is power!
