For anyone who likes Kungfu movies, (Crouching Tiger blah blah) this series is awesome!

Its silly fantasy kungfu so they all have super powers, but meh... Also I have yet to find a version with English (or any other language) subtitles, but I'm told one exists somewhere on the internet.

I would recommend this one. It's called Legend of the Condor Heroes. It's based on one of the more famous wushu novels in China. I like it because it shows the young weakling hero gradually becoming stronger and developing instead of being an all-powerful kung fu expert from the get go. It has English subtitles.

Ha, that is actually quite similar to Xiao Ao Jiang Hu....the main hero is super weak. He almost always gets his ass kicked trying to stick up for others, and I've lost count of the times he's had his life saved by his GF (who is super strong and also happens to be the main villain lol)

Anyway, I will check out this Shooting Eagle Hero's thing after I've finished watching this one!

P.s. The theme music is so weird...the singer doesn't sound like a native Mandarin speaker, is it a Hong Kong made show?

I'm not sure who made it. But the novel was written by the same guy who wrote Xiao Ao Jiang Hu. I only skimmed through the one you posted because I don't understand Mandarin

          You should learn!

There's some Chinese that just can't be translated easily into English, so they just write something weird in the subtitles, or skip it all together.

So it adds a lot of depth to the show if you can understand. Takes about 3-4 years of study to get to where I am though (which is the 'get the gist of it' stage) ><

My favorite martial arts thing is and shall probably forever be...*Dramatic pause*...*Stalling tactic*... Sockbaby. Look for this on YouTube, it's awesome. Done by the same guy who created Earthworm Jim, so it's interesting to say the least.

Its pretty good! I'm up to episode 10 so far. I think I prefer the storyline of Xiao Ao Jiang Hu, but I might be biased because I prefer the main actor of Xiao Ao over 胡歌 Hu Ge (the actor in Condor Hero's)

Then again, your series has Ariel Lin in it, so I will definitely watch it all the way through <3 <3 <3

You're still pretty much at the boring parts. It will get better once the 4 greats appears. A lot better. If you like this story, you should also check out it's sequel the Condor Lovers. It even has Dugu Quibai swordsmanship in it, a level above the Dugu 9 swords you see in Xiao Ao Jiang Hu! And yeah, Ariel Lin is rather adorable.

Yeah, its getting pretty good now!!

But, if no one has killed that bastard Yang Kang by the end of the series I am going to kill whoever made this show

Do you by any chance know the chinese name for the sequel series? I doubt the chinese TV stations have it listed as Condor Lovers...

It should be listed as Return of the Condor Heroes. They have so many remakes of this series im not sure which one to recommend you. The latest one i saw was not too good. They focused on making the main characters looking cool rather than using actors that can act well. There is also a third part, its definately not as good. Its set like 100 years later. But if you want to check it out anyways, its called Heavenly Sword Dragon Sabre, or something like that.

Heh, the ending did not disappoint, which was quite surprising.

These shows tend to end with tragedy, and whilst some of the characters of course had to die, my favorite two somehow managed to survive through to the finale

Anyway, I'm going to try and find a decent version of the sequel (its called Divine Eagle Heroes 神雕侠侣 in chinese btw), but you are right there are a ton of them! Just how many times can you remake a series before it dies horribly :/

Urgh...yeah I tried watching it but I can tell it sucks straight away. Flashy animation effects and costumes but bad script.

I even tried watching the old 1980's one but the laser gun light rays the monk shoots made me laugh too much. They even make loud "zapp" noise!

I think I might wait til next year when apparently the New new version is coming out. I guess it will follow on more closely with the Condor Heroes version you recommended to begin with (which appears to be the newest one).

On another note, I used to watch this series back when I first started learning Chinese. Its more realistic, no one shoots lightning etc but still very good storyline and a good cast of actors. (Oh, and English subs!)

I saw the Tai Chi Master a couple of years back. It was okay, not too good or bad. As for the monk that shoots laser, he's the same actor as the tai chi master's master! The 80s were the versions that I watched. The Condor Heroes was very good even though it lacked in visual effect. The Return of the Condor Heroes 1984 however was only so-so. It's probably the most accurate and detailed one available, but they include a lot of boring stuff also. Here's the rundown on the ones that I remember watching.

1984 - Andy Lau, most detailed and accurate, sometimes boring story line
1995 - Louis Koo, short but fairly decent, gives a good idea of whole story
1998 - Richie Ren, not very accurate but was enjoyable to watch
2006 - Huang Xiaoming, garbage like you said but i watched through the whole thing anyways
