    And Then It Blew Up...

    Hey everyone, my old PC decided to die a pauper's death (I think the mobo shat itself but I was never able to isolate the exact cause of death). I salvaged most of my old parts and have had a new PC built, but am working my way systematically through the problems of turning my old C drive into a new backup drive, namely all my games no longer run and need to be reinstalled. NWN2 is giving me the most trouble for some reason, though I think I have all the kinks worked out (GameSpy dropping hosting was also fun!) I finally got direct connected to the server and am DLing all the stuff again, hopefully with the correct login name and password to get my characters. So I hope to be back soon!

    If anyone has advice for troubleshooting a dead mobo (could be a capacitor but they all look intact, could be the CPU but not sure how to test that without buying a new CPU, could be gremlins) I would love to salvage the old PC as a backup system or sell it to pay for some of the cost of the new tower. I know a certain DM with chronic dead PC syndrome that might benefit from a cheap new PC...
    I can't slow down, I can't hold back though you know I wish I could. No there ain't no rest for the wicked until we close our eyes for good!

        You troubleshoot a part by replacing it, not much else you can do.

        I would guess board over CPU but it could be either.
        The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

          I am thinking if the chip is bad the mobo will at least turn on and then fail. If the mobo is shot nothing will happen at all. Some mobo like mines have a numeric LED that gives error codes and those can be googled to see whats up. Not much help but its something.
