HolyMan and I went to the theater last night after I got off work... everything was sold out. We go this afternoon... everything is sold out until 7:30 p.m. We have tickets to that showing, so we'll experience it soon. Super excited, as we've seen all the prequels as well!

I saw it Saturday and again on Sunday. I am looking to find someone who hasn't seen it yet, so I can go with them to see it again. Joss Whedon rocks. This is the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. This is definitely one you want to see in theaters. Don't wait for it to come out on blue-ray/dvd, because you'll really be missing out.

HM and I saw it Saturday afternoon, and I almost wanted to go back again Sunday except for the massive crowds that I wanted to avoid. The movie was really, really, really good, and Joss Whedon made the impossible possible. Every character got face time... the one-liners and comedic pauses were hilarious... and The Hulk didn't suck.

I definitely want to go see it again!

The Hulk did more than not suck, they managed to make him one of the best parts of the movie! And I've never even cared for the Hulk that much!

This all conflicts with the review I got of it from a friend!

She said it was bog standard Hollywood hero schlock with a plot that had the same integrity as wet tissue paper. The only saving grace was that it was wet tissue paper someone had drawn a rather pretty picture on.

Great if you fancy an evening of slack-jawed mouth breathing or if you considered Transformers 3 to be a sublimely paced intelligent epic with witty characterization and real social themes.

I think it depends on how you look at the movie. The main plot is not going to win any awards, but The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble to you Brits) is very much a movie that focuses on it's characters rather than it's main plot. It's about the interaction between a very different group of superhumans and how they have to overcome their personal conflicts with each other, grow as people, and work together.

The main plot itself is a pretty basic "Badguy trying to take over the world by acquiring a magical MacGuffin". But that's never really the focus of the movie, just the backdrop for pushing these heroes together and making them become team players. Contrast that with Transformers which has completely boring and forgettable characters, and there's a big difference.

Avengers is also dripping with fanservice for anyone who loves the comics it's based on. That may work against it for non-comic fans...sure, the Helicarrier (a flying aircraft carrier) makes perfect sense to fans, but may seem just too outlandish for the average watcher. Even if you're not a comic fan and don't care about the characters, you still get a really great, well-made popcorn action movie with a diverse cast of superheroes and lots of witty dialogue.

In the end it's a comic book movie. Perhaps the movie that feels more like a comic book than any other. That's going to engage some people more than others.

Cool, once I'm back in blighty I'll give it a watch!

I was mighty wary of it after seeing Thor recently. That was some serious gash.
