  • A techie question, maybe client side lag?

I have been noticing over the past couple of months what maybe a significant increase in lag on my end while gaming on Sundren. I can't say if it is happening elsewhere when gaming since I don't game elsewhere but it doesn't seem to be happening for other intrnet applications. I am also not talking about the lag that happened to everybody during the event last night because stuff like that happens and you roll with it. So here goes my best shot at answering a couple of questions and explaining what I have been seeing.

What has changed? Up until about 6 months ago I was wired directly into my router until I had to move my rig and go wireless. I didn't see much difference between wired and wireless at first but I have seemed to suffer gradual performance bleed over time.

Why do I think I might be experiencing lag on my end? I am routinely starting to run into situations where an entire group is already moving but it doesn't resgister on my screen until they are several strides ahead of me. Battles with targets will end for me after others have already moved on to another target. Letting off the "W" key thinking I am stopping at one point only to find the toon is well out in front of where I intended it to be.

The things that I just described above did not happen when I was direct wired and have been increasing in frequency over time. According to my virus software the machine is clean.

Anybody else run into any problems like this? I am guessing it is related to lag from my wireless network but I am just guessing. For all you tech guru's who might really have some idea of what is actually going on I can post whatever spec information you want that will be helpful.

Any thoughts or questions to help you form thoughts?

The server has been experiencing the occasional pockets of lag, but those pockets affect every thing on the server, so rounds of combat don't progress and so on until the server decides it's ready to go. I don't know about your own particular latency.

Just to be clear I am positive that what I am seeing is a separate issue from the one off server lag that happened with Sundren. I am just throwing this against the wall in hopes that someone has seen something similar in the past and might have a suggestion for me to consider looking into with my own PC.

I seem to remember Saulus blaming lots of things on wireless connectivity for gameplay.

Can you try plugging in and seeing if that changes things?

I've been running into a series of issues of my own ever since I downloaded the client extender, but nothing like what you're reporting. I've had performance degradation up to the point of complete 2d and 3d texture failure, spells casting without metamagic or rarely no effect at all, and crashing issues if I play for too many hours without restarting the game.

Humor edit: I've also notice characters disappearing from my vault, but I believe that's an unrelated issue. -eyes Saulus-

            Yeah. Client Extender. *Narrows eyes*

That thing did a badness to my instillation.

Have you donated recently? I hear that causes problems when you don't.

I've noticed a bit of lag as well. I just attributed it to increased populations with little grouping and the remnants of DM events. I've seen lots of people in lots of different areas of the module and if they are all spawning mobs, well that can bog a server down.

the client extension shouldn't modify your install at all...

Unfortunately I don't have a CAT 5 cable that long and there is no longer room to set up the PC near the router.

I don't get on as a player too much, on the DM side I don't notice things like that much. But when on as a player I do notice some things that were described above. If I'm alone, and other players transit onto the map that I'm on, I am aware of the transit due to a slight hiccup with the flow of movement.

Last night though I had the opportunity to run around with 4-5 other people, and boy did it really kick in. Alone, it's minor. As a group, the lag is pretty persistent. The W key thing usually zaps me back to where I started moving 1/10 times, in the group though, I had to avoid it all together as it was about 9/10. hell, even the click to move was crazy.

Oddly enough though, on the DMclient, I have no issues like that when around large groups of people.

WASD movement lags badly, as what you see on your screen (client side) is not necessarily what the actual server is calculating. This is why you sometimes seem to "rubber band" back several yards periodically. Particularly if you drive your character with WASD keys into a clipped/faulty part of the terrain walkmesh.

Best option always: point and click to move somewhere. And if you don't want to constantly hold shift to walk, toggle Detect mode on (or Track mode if you're an Elf) so that you can pick up active search bonuses while moseying down the road.

Yeah WASD has always sucked on NWN2. Point click is the way forward, pardon the pun.
