First, are you particular to any caliber?

Second, are you wanting for home defense, concealed carry, etc?

.45 prefer had a glock 23 and felt it was to clunky and just to much pop for such a light gun .40 cal just a odd one. Mainly will be used for home defense and carry, as well as shooting range to put off some steam.

1911 sweet gun especially glad to hear S&W makes one now, I still would like to get one of the orig Colt M1911A

Colt is also making them still

And I have heard the Kimber is a good gun

but...I'll take my S&W .44 Magnum over any of it, most fun thing to shoot I've ever shot

1911s are excellent handguns. I have two Colts. I would say go handle them at the local store if available to see which one you like best.

Other ideas? Hmm maybe look into a crossbow or a long bow.. the brilliance is that an intruder or robber would never expect you to wield such a weapon and they would likely just run away from you. As an added bonus you could use it to L.A.R.P.?

I've shot the Kimber custom carries. Very nice weapons. A bit too much recoil for my tastes.

You shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the .40S&W round, though. There is a reason so many law enforcement agencies have switched out to it. Ballistics are close to the .45ACP, but the slightly smaller round allows a higher capacity in teh same size magazine. Overall, a great round for personal/home defense.

My personal firearm is an H&K USP in .40. It's, hands down, the best semi-auto I have ever fired. A bit too bulky for concealed carry, but great to shoot and accurate as hells.

For concealed carry, I'm very partial to the H&K P2000 sub-compact. Problem is...costs more than I can afford. The other two I have fired that I absolutely love are the Baretta PX4 Storm pistol and the CZ Rami. Both are available in .40S&W and have a decent capacity. Both are very manageable in both size and recoil and very accurate out to about 10 meters (what I usually set sights for). The Rami is based off a combination of the CZ75 and the 1911 and is the cheapest of the ones I like. If I was to get one for concealed carry, that is the one I'd buy simply due to cost. Any of these 3 are wonderful for what you are seeking.

Dont get me wrong i did enjoy my .40, i think its glock design that really turned me off to the whole thing. Price range will be based on 1,000 to 1500 usd. I have big hands but like the feel of a 1911 , prior was a WW2 A1 GI model. Loved it supreme accuracy great gun , but gave it to my father along with my shotgun and glock when i left for the military couple years ago.

Wanted to upgade to nicer gun this time , i havent got the chance to fire any kimbers yet , the gun shops i went to only had crap to rent , rugers , walthers < cant stand, and a few other mediocre.

Problem with the concealed version for most guns, i hate the thickness so i usually go single stack 6+1 for 5'' barrel , not sure i want a 3''.

I still miss my Baretta 92, it was a wonderful firearm. But it was also a 9mm, I don't like recoil since my hands are my life. I can't risk anything happening to them. My baby now is the Baretta CX4 Storm, I absolutely love my carbine. Anytime I get to shoot it I'm one very happy girl!!!

But as far as a sidearm is concerned....go with what you like and what you can afford and what your going to be happy with. Only you can make that decision.

I would strongly suggest putting any weapon you may consider purchasing in your hand. The ergonomics of the weapon are critical when using them for more than range shooting.

For example, do you have to move the weapon to release the magazine with your thumb, or release the slide, or toggle off the safety... the less you have to move the weapon for each of these actions reduces the "heavy" feel of the weapon. As a result your grip is maintained, which improves accuracy over the course of engaging more than a handful of targets.

I prefer 9mm because I can control the recoil and maintain my accuracy while shooting 2 and 3 shot combinations. I have owned and enjoyed shooting .44M and .45 semiautomatics. When I was routinely doing competition shooting I found a small framed 1911 Browning Hi-Power to be the weapon I scored best with. But my Glock 19 is by far my preferred weapon... but to each his or her own.

I hope your choice makes you happy. Cheers!
                      Cheers!

For a conceal carry for protection, I wouldn't put too much faith in an automatic.

as long as you don't buy the POS Beretta M9, you should be good.

I was always a fan of the Super Soaker 50. Get yourself two extra barrels just in case and load those bad boys up with some holy water, you'd be the f'kn savor of Sundren, man. I'm pretty sure the guy below kill Clive & Isolde a few times.
