  • Books for me to read

Hello, I've just finished the "Harry Potter" series and I'm looking for some books of the same quality written in English. I'm not native English speaker (and definitely not a writer , but I can read fluently with no problems. I like the books like "Pride and Prejudice" written by Jane Austin, but can't decide, if I should read such a books, because they probably use old already unused worlds and grammar and I don't want to confuse myself even more.

So if you know about some books of "Harry Potter" quality written in English let me know please. Thanks. Yep and I prefer British English (but it's not so serious). Thanks.

If you haven't already, definitely read The Lord of the Rings series. And The Hobbit.

If you are a fan of supernatural type, the Harry Dresden Files by Jim Butcher is a good series.

Dragonlance series , start with the beginning , and look for the books about the characters back stories, gives you alot more indepth info into each of the characters, not to mention just great books all together, and you understand whats going on in each of the characters lives when the Series takes over . Think its Dragons of autumn which is first, but dont quote me

The Dresden files are really nice.

My favorite book series of the last few years is still the Noble Dead series by Barb Hendee (and her husband, I think). You have no idea how many nwn characters I have patterned off the ones in those books.

Oh...and if you can find them, there was a GREAT series by Peter Morwood (or Norwood...can't really remember) many years back. The titles were like Dragon Lord, Demon Lord, and a couple other "Lord" ones. I have them somewhere in the house and I'll put a better description if I can find one.

Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (and now Brandon Sanderson)

Epic fantasy series (the term "epic" is NOT used lightly here, it's pretty huge), though admittedly it slows down a bit around volume 6 or 7, to pick up speed again in later volumes. My personal favorite. (And I'm no native speaker myself)

Yup! That is the first one. The Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

It is definitely a fun series to read.

This is also a good thread for me, because I was gifted with a Nook for Christmas.

The Dresden Files (Series) Jim Butcher
Earth Abides (Novel) George R. Stewart
                The Belgariad/Mallorian (Series) David Eddings
Incarnations of Immortality (Series) Piers Anthony
The Empire of Man (Series) David Weber/John Ringo
                ...Anything by Edgar Rice Burroughs

The writing styles are either modern american or writen formal enough it doesnt matter...everyone should read Earth Abides

If you are just looking for a good read any of the epic fantasy suggestions are good

If you are looking to keep it in modern english and/or american stay away from anything labled epic fantasy a la Robert Jordan

I strongly recommend the Magician series by Raymond E. Feist. I devoured those books, and I want to read them again soon.

I love the Legends Trilogy about Rastilin and his brother.

I am also a huge fan of the villians series, especially the Lord Toede book.

Highly recommended: J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Michael Critchton, Elaine Cunningham, Dean Koontz, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, Terry Pratchett, Robert E. Howard

Semi-recommended: Anne Rice, Stephen King (either the Shining, The Stand, or his short stories), R.A. Salvatore, Jeff Grubb, Richard A. Knaak, Ed Greenwood, George Orwell

Popular, but overrated: Stephen King (everything else), Jack London, Phillip Pullman

There's at least a half-dozen others, but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

Legends was probably my favorite of the series finding out all the back story to Raistlin and his brother makes Rast that much more of a bastard, but sooooo much more a bad ass.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, but also recommend just about any of his works, some of my favorite being Salem's Lot, The Stand, and Insomnia.
