  • Homework Help: Stereotypes

In my German class we're doing a section on stereotypes and for homework I have to ask at least 10 people about what they think of Germans/Germany/the German language/etc and then write a short paper.

The rest of my class will be asking people within a 12 mi radius, but I think I would get more interesting answers from you all than from Midwestern farmers.

So if you wouldn't mind helping me, could you please post a short reply with your country of origin (and province, if you want) and however much or little you want to chime in about Germany/German(s).

Germans: Beer and Sausage, and knowing how to Party.

(I was actually stationed in Germany for a bit, while I was in the U.S. Army.)

Tight arsed, efficient, unable to party and we have no sense of humor that we are aware of.

We have good bread and beer though.

Strong, butch women (that don't shave?), Arian race, efficent, good beer, well-made cars, big sausages and over-dramatic language. Also lost two world wars which they created, therefore an over-zealous and patriotic society, but don't want to sound prejudice, just a sterotype for myself.

That is interesting. There might be some patriotism in Germany. But most Germans would laugh at the patriotism like in the USA. You'll hardly see a German flag on the streets or things like that. I'd say many Germans are afraid of such a patriotism and those Germans that say they are "proud to be german" usually are Nazis.

This might have changed a bit during the soccer world championship in 2006. But you can't compare the german patriotism with the one in the USA.

              Sweden.

Most memorable experience I've had with Germans was when I was working at a beach camp a few years ago, and half the tourists there were from Germany.

              They wrecked everything they touched.
Litter bugs like I had never seen.
Memorably, they on frequent occasions randomly stood up in canoes and blessed the lake with their urine.

There was much pointing at this, I recall.

They drank enough alcohol to challenge the Danish tourists (A notable accomplishment).
              And they definitely never showered.

But maybe that's the drunk tourist stereotype?

EDIT: Oh, and I noticed drunk German is even more hilarious than drunk Danish, language wise.
              They tipped well, though!
"Sir, we're surrounded!" "Excellent! Now we can attack in any direction."

Strong, industrious, efficient, forward thinking; as a country, one to be envied for their outlook and reactivity toward things in the world that will affect everyone (like climate change... our PM still thinks dinosaurs walked with cavemen I think, and just won't admit it publicly * sigh *).

The language, although with the Neuter is a bit annoying, is pretty easy to pick up (I remember more German from university than I do French... and I took French for all Highschool and again AFTER my German).

This topic is proof why trying to get Sundren-ites as psych studies for homework is a very, very bad idea.
