Anyone played this yet? I can't make up my mind whether to buy it or not - every review I read is giving it a horrendous write-up, but then awarding it a respectable overall score... I think they're trying to do it just to confuse me!

Anyone here got any thoughts on it?

I can't give my opinion, I got turned off of the Franchise by the time Final fantasy 3 came out.

If they can recapture the elements from #1, I may consider looking into it again.

It takes a truly, truly awful game to get a bad score these days, or a developer that can't afford to give loads of freebies and incentives to the major reviewing groups.

I'll only play it if I can use my original gray, three inch thick gameboy with it.

I can't stand FF games... Buy Dawn of War 2 Chaos Rising

Must admit that 12 turned me off majorly, and I refused to play the WoW wannabe number 11, but I've played all the others, and loved them all. This one doesn't seem to be in the same league though from what I can make out.

Uri.. I am an avid FF fan, I even enjoyed 12 as it was more free-roaming, but this one changes it all up a bit. Its far more linear for about the first 20 hours of the game, the leveling system is awesome, as its a combination of 10's sphere system and 3 aka 6's Class system.

The combat is awesome looking, dynamic and fun. The only draw back is that at the beginning of the game, you only get to use 1-2 abilities for about three hours. And whilst in combat you only get to use the primary designated "Leader" Character but at the higher levels there soo much for you to do that your thankful that the developers forced you to play one character.

Story wise, It is an awesome game, just like all the other final fantasies, as a matter of fact, Square went out of their way to create a great mythology and backdrop for this world. It was definitely worth trading in both MW2 and MaG for this.

And Qinn if you want an awesome final fantasy that takes it back to the old days of 1-3. Check out final fantasy 9. Its style, mythology and combat are very much like the originals.
Everyone exept yourself is to blame, you say your not satified. Well okay... You can have it all. Everything you crave, money, pleasure wrapped in leather, fortune and fame. Just sell your soul

ff took a down turn when you had to spend obscene hours to get a rare drop or play stupid minigames to get good gear. Beating the game became easy to do, and side quests became irrelevant to the story.

Any ff after the cloud strife story.. meh not difficult. not that 7 was all that difficult, 'less you went after the weapons.

My take on current ff they are still fun. but not like the good ol final fantasy titles. not even 9.

7 was by far my favourite. They're not really designed to be difficult. You want difficult, play DMC

                          Screw DMC. Ninja Gaiden.

Anyway, they're telling the same story over and over and over again with each "new" FF. Remake 4, 6, 7, 9, and Chrono Trigger with sweet graphics and extra features, IMO.

I'm sincerely curious if you even played FFXI. Considering it came out well before World of Warcraft, and on top of that, was dramatically different from it.

And don't get me wrong. I'm not a FFXI or even a general Final Fantasy fanboy. In fact, I got so frustrated with FFXI, due to the mechanics and ridiculously boring way of leveling. It's so dramatically different from WoW in extreme ways.

It also was released in North America over a year before World of Warcraft was (that's entirely overlooking the fact of how long it had been out in Japan at that point, as well).

Calling it a WoW wannabe honestly makes zero sense to me.

As to FFXIII. Meh. It's beautiful looking. Has a decent plot. Most of the characters are alright. I'm disappointed by the linearity (but not shocked, because I had read reviews well in advance all complaining about it). I'm also disappointed in how little you can customize each character with the new leveling system.

It looks expansive at first, but you end up finding it's not as open-ended as it first appears. FFX's system was an example of a great system that allowed a lot of customization in each character's 'build.'

Overall, I enjoyed Heavy Rain far more. Despite it being a far shorter game. It was still amazing in its story telling, dialogue, and fascinating choices.

My comparison was purely on the basis that there was an MMO with a subscription fee. Every one of these types of game wants to be like WoW But still, both tenets that fly right in the face of everything Final Fantasy.
