I'd have to say that Artemis Entrari is definitely a great character, especially when in tandem with Jarlaxle Baen're. Both have incredible character complexity, and compellingly real personalities. I'm very surprised that the same person who wrote the terrible Drizzt Do'Urden character manage to redeem his credibility with characters such as they. (On a side note- Rai-Guy and Kimmuriel are awesome, too. Pinnacle of Drowness, each.)

Elminster, for such a powerful character in the FR setting, is a terribly dry and uncompelling character. Mordenkaiden definitely owns him, as does the Netherese lich, Larloch, both of whom in their relatively short actual character detail time beat him out, in my opinion.

As for organizations... I'd have to lay my kudos to the Red Wizards of Thay. They are more agressive, and yet at the same time infinitely more complex and insidious than any other collection out there. Those Who Harp are more annoying than anything else, and few of the individual members (with notable exceptions like Khelban Arunsan aside) pique my interest. The Sharn, and their wars with the Phaerrimm, are also deeply interesting, as are the reminents of the Shades (the last of Netherese). The Zhentarim are interesting in concept, but the overall delivery of their intent and actions seem to blunt their original subtlty.
    Active
Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

    Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

        "The Drizzit" isn't terrible!! ^_^

Second in line for me aside from Artemis would be Pikel...
Dwarven druid, green beard, saying "heehee!" and "Poof!" all the time goes a long way for me

Plus, I have a thing for characters that have to grapple with issues of faith, family, and conscience.
Yus! Go Cadderly! Though his arch-rival was pretty darn cool too.

              Yeah...as a character, Drizz't kinda blows.

Jarlaxle's good, but I actually find myself liking Obould Many-Arrows.
              Mirumoto Akagi: What is dance?
Dalon Arogard: It's this. *busts a move*
              Llew Hy: A strange compulsion...
Mirumoto Akagi: I suppose you can dance if you like, but you're leaving our friends behind, and they're not dancing.
Dalon Arogard: Then they're no friends of mine.

                Lord Soth FTW!!!

I intend to reap your sorrow slowly and have ages to discover the things that make you suffer... I am eager to revel in the sweet melody of your screams and the melancholy of your despair..."

Lord Soth isn't FR, is he? He's DragonLance. And Ravenloft, I think. Or was it Greyhawk...?

Drizzt's okay. I think he gets less credit than he should because he single-handedly destroyed the drow race in any game featuring dark elves. From a litereary standpoint, he's a very deep and interesting character, and it's kind of moving to follow his journeys (Especially his little journal entries... Very moving as well as containing many universal truths).

Obould Many-Arrows is okay. He's interesting in the fact he's fairly intelligent for an Orc, but other than that... Meh.

For Forgotten Realms, I'd have to say Elminster (Or the Knights of Myth Drannor, seeing as they act almost like one big character). He's always held a special place in my heart for some reason... (EDIT: A runner-up would be the half-elf Harper 'assassin' from Elaine Cunningham's novels... Oh, what's her name... The one with the moonblade...) (EDIT2: Oh, and Cadderly... Ahhhhh.... So many choices. How about I just I just say I think they're all 'meh' equally?)

For any other setting, it is - hands down - Raistlin and Caramon Majere (They're a packaged deal, you can't have just one...). Their relationship is one of the most complex I've every read, and it's elevated to nearly tear-jerking status in the Twins series. And If you don't know who these people are, then you need to go start reading DragonLance. Now.

Anyways, I don't read FR much anymore. I might check some out just to get back into the FR so I can RP in it better, but I mostly read DL and Star Wars.)

Lord Soth is Dragonlance yes, or was. Ravenloft is where he is now, one of the Domain Lords.. Quite interesting novel :P
Visiting the all mighty Strahd Von Zarovich, and strahd wanted to keep him inside his castle, SO! send a young red dragon after him...

After finding out it doesn't help much biting into a deathknight's bone arm, Soth just grabbed it by the jaws and broke them

                      Attitude...precious...

Soth is originally a Knight of the Rose from Dragonlance, was lured into Ravenloft by Strahd himself, and I believe wandered back into Dragonlance at some point.

My point was, all the good characters are in other realms...
Don't even get me started on Dark Sun...

I found the Hunter's Blade trilogy extremely underwhelming due to the apparent lack of any good resolution. I felt Obould had survived because he was a character inside the Main Campaign book and they were like "No, Drizzt can't kill him - we still need Obould as a usable NPC".

                          Urrk.

I really like Elaine Cunningham's work... except that she has one major failing; she always seem to run out of space to write her book and such rushes her endings and often go for Deus Ex Machina extreme situations.

                          For example, in the second Liriel & Fyodor book, Liriel did some bogus crap so that she could be an Avatar of Lolth. Personally, I think a wand of fireball would have done the trick >_>;

The third book was like "Let's go to Rashemen!" *pop* teleported. I was like "What? Where's my overland trip with Liriel and Fyodor exploring stuff and interacting?!" Ugh.

The series I think Cunningham pulled off the best was the one in Halruaa. That one was a high magic, high fantasy trilogy - I had less trouble stomaching the ultra-uber things in the endings.

I didn't like how the sextet of books on the War of the Spider Queen ended. Basically, all the characters you get to know... die. Events before the silence of Lolth and after are not significantly different except for Lolth having 'her own plane'. Bah.

Back to the matter of the favorite characters though... I'd say that Wulfgar and Innovidil are close contestants. Wulfgar's fall-from-grace and scrapping up to find a meaning for his life is something I found very engaging. Innovidil (even though I don't like her name) was nice for being an elf that acted like one and for taking the time to teach the reader and Drizzt how an elf was supposed to be instead of just go "Elfpower!" and feel very little like Elaine Cunningham.
