So I'm hankering to upgrade my processor right now, and I figure who better to ask advice from than the geekiest geeks I know?

So the processor I'm considering is the Core 2 Quad Q9550. Its a 2.83Ghz processer with a 1333fsb and 12Mb L2 cache, and I'll be paying around £175 gbp for it. This as I see it is likely going to be my best option financially.

The alternative is to buy a new motherboard and go AMD instead, but I don't have anything specific I've seen that catches my eye in this regard.

    Any thoughts?

I briefly talked your options over with my brother. We both agree that the Q9550 is a solid choice.

There is not much else you could buy if you don't want to update your board and probably also your RAM.

Actually there's the i7 range, but they are seriously expensive in comparison. I'd rather keep my purchase under £200, and most of the low end i7 processors start at about £400+.

Thank you for giving the only sensible answer I got lol.

Of course there is the i7. But you said you wanted to update your CPU. And where i live that means just the CPU and not the CPU+board+RAM

My motherboard is capable of taking an i7 already

                  A board that has a 775 and a 1366 socket? I'd say you'd better check that again.

What CPU do you have now anyway?

AMD is behind... that is all. Hoping they catch up because I was die hard AMD until Intel launched the core line and pimp slapped them

ATM I'm running a pentium D 2.8Ghz. It's rubbish. According to my documentation my board can take several processors from the i7 family.

So I went with the Q9550 and itr finally arrived today. And now I'm practically beating my head against the wall wanting to get home to install it!

The Q9550 is a sound CPU. It came out just a week after I built my X-2 system; needless to say I was gutted!
