  • New Monitor

My monitor is on its last legs, so time for a new one. I'd appreciate some advice from some experts!

I have a GeForce 8600 GT card, but may upgrade in the next year or so. I don't watch movies on the computer--just games. I play in the living room though, which has an overhead light.

What are the important monitor specs for gaming? Brightness, contrast ratio, and response time? What are some recommended numbers for those specs that I should look for?

Less than 5ms response time and at least a 10000:1 colour contrast ratio (dynamic). I personally would recommend going with something like a 20 inch widescreen, really for gaming you are limited by your GPU for resolution and FPS in games.

Once you go above 20 inch the card will struggle with more demanding games like NWN2.

Don’t wait for the sparks and smoke to start coming out of it like I did my last one, screen suddenly went all black and I had to log in the middle of RP.

Luckily my brother stockpiled some old ones and I had a replacement the very next day.

Never underestimate the importance of a surge protector either. A lot of people think it's only important to stop lightning spikes, but that's not the case. Unregulated power to your unit can fluctuate up to 10% either side of the 120 volt ring main (in the US, in Britain it's 240 volts!), meaning that at times your monitor's transformer has to handle up to 12v of extra power, which will cause it to deteriorate. A surge protector will regulate the power to a steady voltage at all times.
