  • Computer Problems

Hey, for the last few days I've been trying to figure out what in the Nine Blazes is wrong with my computer. I can spend about 5 minutes playing NWN2 before it decides to throw me the black screen of death, and well.....I kind of want to shove a knife through the monitor at this point.

Instead, I'll allow the highly technically skilled community of Sundren help me out.

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
    System Manufacturer: Gateway
    System Model: M465-E
    BIOS: Rev 1.0
    Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2250 @ 1.73GHz (2 CPUs)
    Memory: 1022MB RAM
Page File: 619MB used, 1838MB available
    Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Video Card name: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
    Sound Description: SigmaTel Audio

I've tried everything from buying a new fan for my laptop, to dusting the insides thoroughly, to defragging the damn thing. Any thoughts?

Ouch... My NWN2 was taking 900 megs last night.

If you are getting black screens you might try these things:

      1) Play windowed mode, it could be a standard crash that just makes everything unresponsive. Sometimes crashes are easier for your system to recover from if you aren't in fullscreen.

      2) Update drivers! They do get bugs after all and incompatibilities.

      3) Figure out what else is running on your system you may not have to have running. That anti-virus can be a pain in the booty or that video recording software

      4) Try diagnostic software. I can't think of any off the top of my head since I havn't used any since 1998, but maybe some hardware is failing that you aren't aware of.

      5) Pray. Jesus saves! And changes water into Harddrive space.

It's possible that your power supply is failing.. Are you able to play any other graphics intensive games on your lappy at this moment?

Is it overheating when it blacks out?

If so, couple simple things brought to you by technically unskilled badger would be to

          - make sure you remove the battery when you don't use it
          - try an external cooler ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laptop_cooler ); I've got one and it's awesome.

Turns out that I may just be shelling out some cash for a new computer any way. This thing is about 4 years old, and has always given me numerous problems. And with the economy the way it is, a newer computer would be cheaper rather than fixing this one, because I think it may be fried.

It's not a "256mb Shared" vid card is it? I mean, you've got 4gb to share from, those Shared vid cards just blow though - FYI.
