  • Hello and well met!

Greetings, everyone. I'm obviously quite new to Sundren and definitely looking forward to some solid role-play in a solid PW. I suppose I'm nowhere near old enough to rank myself as a veteran but neither am I new to RP! I began first with pure text RP on forums what seems like an eternity ago, for lack of people with common interest in my area (which, at that time, was Vancouver - I mean, you'd figure you could find at least 3 tabletop mates in a city of 2 million!).

A couple of years ago I spent some time on a NWN PW, but left the community for various reasons. I suppose the main issue was what I felt to be the authoritative air of the staff (I know some measure of hierarchy is necessary with online communities, but there are boundaries), as well as the absolute resistance to change. Credibility worked only on a timed basis, so it felt as though you were always but a peon with no merit unless you had already been a member for 2 years or so. There were also basically two groups that received all the RP and DM attention, and if you didn't get in with them, well... you spent a lot of time bumping into people who'd never heard of punctuation.

Now, I realize starting a greeting with a heap of criticism (RP baggage?) is going to put me in a certain light, but I guess I have to take the dive because I have had bad experiences in the past and I am looking for a couple of things from a community. I wonder if I could perhaps enumerate them and get some feedback, or is it best to just jump right into the world and find out first-hand?

If you're still reading by this point.. I have a question! I am unable to find character application threads, so, barring the blocked races/classes, do I require approval before I make a char and grab my sword and start lobbing off rat-heads?

Thanks for your time and (hopefully) input!

Well welcome to sundren. As you can see by my join date I'm still fairly new here but am approaching my second month. Like ALL servers you will find that the well known RPers who have been here a while will always get "more attention" ... it's a fact of PW life really. A couple of thigns you'll find about sundren, however, are:

    1. Levels definitely have nothing to do with how much attention you get cause some people have been around for practically ever and still haven't breeched level 10 because they would rather RP with players than grind for XP

    2. 90% of DM events are conducted with all levels and done very well with the level 16s working together with level 3s and 6s and such. Obviously the chance of death for the lower levels is greater but every DM I have seen has given a free raise and just had you RP being "on the brink of death" which can add to the RP even more in most cases.

    3. It is not hard to get attention here. The quickest way is to be creative, create a character that is unique and stands out. Making another druid that loves trees and speaks nicely to animals ... or the rogue that hides everywhere ... or the fighter that acts like an ass, while fun to play, is just gonna have you meld right into the big ball of players that already exists.

Hop in and have fun, you shouldn't have problems getting into sundren. You may find the combat/death hard to begin with but if you stick with it like I did I think you'll find it is definitely for the better in the long run.

Yeah, and although I agree with Gevaudan in everything. The chance of death is indeed VERY high, I think in every event i've participated in Saniah and Iilithania have died, at least once. The good thing is is that the DMs are merciful on you and just say you got the wind knocked out of you, along with a few cups of blood and other vital fluids ^.^
[[And the reasin WHY i died being that I am level 3-5 in both characters ]]

I also know how it feels to feel the need to get into a clique or something to get noticed by anyone, i've been to much too many communities in much too many games with the same problem... and when I finnally did get into a clique, things sort of fell apart. Lets just say, you might want to feel lucky you never got into a clique <.<
Or not! Thats just my personal experience.

Welcome to ze Sundren fine sir.

        First of all, Welcome!

Secondly, well you only need an application if you are trying to play a restricted race or class and you can only apply if you have been nominated as RPer of the month and have won.

Lastly, It is not hard to stand out DM events here are geared mainly towards all levels with a few exeptions.

Actually it's only if you've WON roleplayer of the month :P not just if you've been nominated.

Heh but ya no application necessary just make sure you read carefully what is allowed and what isn't as far as races and such.

Well, it's mademoiselle, actually, but sir always sounded far better so we'll stick with that (a la Battlestar Galactica :B).

Thank you for the prompt responses. The community certainly feels warm and promising. @ Gevaudan, yes, indeed, stereotypes are, well, stereotypes, and not too much credit to creativity. But then, the opposite of stereotypes are quite the same! Makes me think of NWN1, the NPCs before the expansions were: a ladies' man chaotic good rogue halfling, a female elven cleric, a sexy human female bard with an attitude, and a half-orc barbarian (albeit, a well-spoken one), an obsessive gnome spellcaster.. Then, with the expasion, I suppose they decided to be "original," and we got a female dwarven rogue (no one EVER plays female dwarves, right? ..Right?), a half-orc sorcerer, and a shrunken Jar Jar Binks bard with a throat-scraping... probably some others there, I didn't really get past the original campaign (I think it's clear why)... my point being! The stark opposite of stereotype is, in a way, also stereotype, so I do agree with you Gevaudan, creativity is integral to roleplay. Not to say there's anything uncreative about being a human male fighter! It's all up to us.

Well after a pretty nasty incident that could make horror story headlines that happened to my partner in crime on our PW we made, I make it a point to assume everyone I encounter via video games is male until proven otherwise

No offense on yourself trust me heh . The last woman I encountered in NWN1 got so annoyed with me not believing she was a girl that she demanded I get on MSN and talk to her over the microphone. At that point I was convinced she was either a girl with the two kids I heard in the background or a really female sounding fat guy named Bill who abducts children from the mall .... i'd like to think it was the former

I think the test if it's "really a girl" or not is the amount of attention they draw to it. Repeated pictures and constant "reminding" of the organs one possesses always seems fishy to me.

To that end, I usually let myself be referred to as male, I just find things easier that way. Sad but true... but as you can see, I decided I was only adding to the problem by hiding away so now, as the Polish saying goes, "the knitting needle has come out of the bag." Yeah, I know. Makes more sense in Polish. Anyways. All that is irrelevant. I'm someone's very skilled pet turtle for all you know.

Hrm...some of us just die ALL the time! ;P
J/K...RPing the arrogant mage that can't seem to fight his way out of a wet paper sack save for his diminsion door spell which he always gets in trouble with is far better than dying to EVERYTHING IN SUNDREN!!!

On a side note, I though maybe I would go down in the sewers the other day because I was a little sick from dying twice in the day already. So, I go in and buff up. Then I polymorph to my ever-favorite troll form and go to town. The lizardlings were falling right and left. I was slaughtering everything in sight! Who cares if they all con'd white-effortless to me? I was a powerhouse! A mean green lizard squishing machine!

Then it happened...one of my buffs dropped, then another. The wisest thing I could think to do was run. I don't normally have much in the way of handy damage spells when I load up on troll buffs. But I wasn't fast enough. And they ganged up on me...you guessed it. I died! It was most fortuitous that I only had a couple of hundred points into level 8...but that would be because it was my THIRD death of the day!

                      ...so now I just RP...

Welcome to Sundren, by the way!

Yea I know that you've already hated on the click thing, but i do have a group of friends that my MAin toon runs around with. But we don't really get much Dm attention. From what i can see the people on Sundren are good at giving you all the RP you need and the Dms just put the very amazing icing on the cake. Anyways i mention my little group because we have begun to call ourselves the jinxed adventuring company because sometimes we're rolling through places clearing dungeons with impunity, and then some random thing happens to change our luck and then one of us dies...and then the next follows suit until we have only one or two of us left and they're almost dead, trapped in a corner, and out of ways to heal themselves..... this happens more than we might like to admit...and even sometime with ememies that should be effortless for us. Anyways i would recomend some Rping . You'll be gaining the time xp anyways, and this community is just great.

I didn't mean to "hate on" anything - of course we're going to gravitate towards groups to RP in, after all, that's what table-top is all about. I'm just saying that it detracts from the experience when only about 12 people on the server get *all* the DM attention, which has happened to me. After half a year or so, it starts to become very noticeable - particularly when those certain people keep getting RP XP, and no one else does, and well, you see where I'm going with this.

Thank you for the welcomes, I certainly do feel welcome! I'm just working on the updates right now. I keep getting "client and server version do not match." I'm running 1.13.1409, I have run the Sundren updater until it tells me the update is complete. Do I need to run it multiple times?

Well the best of luck to you. I don't think that Sundren will disappoint you. Again, welcome, and i hope that some who knows how to fix your problem helps you soon. you should post it in the private help section if you don't get an answer soon . P.S. they will help. I'm basically computer illiterate, and it took me over a week to get the server working right ( there were some router issues at the time that have since been fixed), but the Dms and Devs just kept trying to help me out even when i had bothered them all to the point of insanity. now i try to make up for thier trouble by providing some good RP, but I digress. Welcome, good luck and happy RPing!
