  • Asalamalakum

    Hello!

Just a quick greeting from a newbie, just waiting for the last parts of the updater to finish installing before I can dive in. Been a long time since I've managed to have time to get onto an RP server, or even managed to find time for a PnP game.

Still, heard good things about Sundren and look forward to becoming part of the community (well, trying anyway!)

Umm, I hate to ask stupid questions and all, but what does "Asalamalakum" mean?

Asalamalakum is arabic. It loosely translates to "peace be with you"

Asalakumasalam is usually the return greeting which means loosely "peace be with you as well."

Correct me if I am mistaken.
Tis now the very witching time of night,

Yup, Arabic for 'Peace be upon you' fairly normal way of saying hello!

The normal reply is 'Lakum Salam'; kind of saying 'peace to you to'

Spelt in about a bazillion different ways though, so no idea if I got it right!

As-Salām `Alaykum is a standard Arabic greeting. It is usually translated as 'Peace be upon you'. They tell me (the arabs) that if you say this, a true Muslim MUST respond with:

wa `Alaykum As-Salām - which usually is translated 'and on you peace'
I have found that even if you say this is a true Muslim, if your white (not arabic) they will not respond.

Of course, this is how it is suppost to be said... I have found that most people that use this greeting (including my Arabic Mentor and I) will drop all the extra parts so it sounds something like:

                    uh'Salam 'Ah-lay-ee-kum. Ah-lay-ee-kum Salam.

                    Hope that helps!
