  • So what of power critical.

So I was wondering about the Power Critical feat, according to the feat it's supposed to give you a +4 bonus to your roll to confirm a critical threat. What I'm wondering is how does this supposedly work? For instance if you have a critical threat range of 19-20 does that mean that the new critical threat range is 15-16 instead of 19-20 or would it be 15-16 and 19-20. If you assume that the roll caps out at 20 (with the +4) then would the range actually become 15-20? I've selected this feat before for some of my test characters but I've never really seen a definitive result. For one feat making the critical range of a weapon to 15-20 seems overpowered, but just changing it to 15-16 seems useless. So here's hoping somebody has an idea of how it actually works .

you are misunderstanding how the feat works. IF you roll a hit which threatens a crit (say a 19 or 20 with a longsword) you roll another to hit roll against that enemy, if that second roll is a hit, you have a critical and get bonus damage. The power critical feat just gives you a +4 on the second to hit roll, it will have no effect on what number you need on the first roll to threaten a critical. If that doesn't make sense ask questions and I'll explain more.

If you score a crit, your attack sequence went as follows:

1: Roll attack roll within critical threat range
2: Roll attack roll to confirm crit
      3: Roll damage

Power critical gives you a +4 bonus on the roll in step 2.

Ahh... I see, because it said +4 to the roll to confirm a critical threat I thought it meant the threat range roll. Well then, I guess I won't be taking that feat anymore because it doesn't do what I thought it did lol. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, the feat just plain isn't worth it, really.

lol... +4 to the threat range. That would be so unbalanced.

it's not a great feat but there are worse ones, if you already had improved crit and weapon specialization as a fighter and get one of those free fighter feats, sure pile it on, but for most people yes, there are far better feats.

I took it only because I love crits on my fighter. If you have nothing better to pick, like me, then go for it.

Crits with my scythe cause somewhere around 70 damage...So this feat might be worth taking for me =)

Karthus would eat your face with immunity to criticals. But Apocryphus would die seven times over, with fabric.

Too bad, he's a crazy nut. Hopefully we will get to see more of him soon. Puck needs someone to compete with after all.

Oh yes, speaking of crits, please do not test them on Puck.

Immunity to crits? Bah, take 'em like man

There's a bit of math that can be done with it to compare it to something like weapon focus. Let's take a scythe for the fun of it. When doing such calculations you multiply the value by the probability of it occurring. A scythe crits on 1/20 and has a x4. So your damage x3 is the value of the threat roll. The feat would make you hit on an additional 4 number values on the d20 on a threat roll. This means the value of the feat is:
                              (1/20)*(4/20)*(3)*(damage) or (0.03)*(damage)
                              Weapon focus is:
                              (0.0575)*(damage)
As you can see, weapon focus is the better feat, but not by a lot. Fast forward to level 8/9 and you get improved critical, doubling it to 0.06, making it marginally better then weapon focus. The same value applies to the 18-20 critters, and weapon masters shake around the numbers a lot. There's also a tactical advantage in landing high damage single hits. So, as far as numbers go, it's a good feat for the high crit weapons. The real trick to damage is power attack with a two handed weapon
                              EDIT: fixed da numbas
