  • Blue Screen

Whenever i play nwn2, after a while I always get the ever popular "blue screen". It only happens with nwn2 so i dunno what's up...

The screen basically just says: "Memory Parity Error"

    Any ideas team?

This has something to do with either --
    Your graphics card
    or
The way you have installed something in your system (RAM, Graphics card e.c.t)

These are the problems I had when my computer was doing it every 10 minutes or so.

Sounds like that either your RAM is defect or that your RAM settings in the BIOS are not correct. You should try this and let it run for at least a few hours (i usually let it run for a day after i have installed new RAM)

I had a similar problem a while back, and it was due to new RAM I'd installed not syncing properly with the old stuff. Oddly enough it only seemed to bluescreen out when using certain programs as well. I'd back Maevan's suggestion!

yes, every ordinary CD burning program should be sufficient. Usually its called something like "burn CD image". I don't know whether the program that is built into XP/Vista can do it too.

ONce you have burned the image just boot from that CD

Just so you know, NWN2 is pretty memory intensive, so RAM errors can give you all sorts of trouble.

Doing the memtest should let you know if something is up.

Ok so I let it run all night. Everything that got tested was fine, but it didn't finish (needed to use my comp). I originally thought it was to do with my graphics card overheating, so i got speedfan and such. It seems that when the temp gets in the 80 degree range it's time for a blue screen. It could just be a coincidence, so whadda you guys think? I think it might have gotten better since i started using speedfan and dropped all nwn2 graphic settings to the lowest possible.

I'm trying to do everything I can short of getting new parts...

If that's 80 Celsius then that's getting really hot. If it's Fahrenheit then it's rather cool. Is this your CPU or your graphics card? Critical temp for CPUs can vary from 60C to 80C, but not usually higher then that I don't know how hot a graphics card should be running, but if it's C then over-heating is probably your problem. If that's in F then your cooling is working well and it's probably not the source of the problem.

It's C, and the slowdown threshold for my graphics card is 103, so even though my temp is high, it's not disastrous.

Thinking I might do system restore..reinstall etc.

Umm... where did you get that number? 103C is really, really hot. I think as a general computer rule, if you can boil water with it, it's too hot.

EDIT: I looked around and it seems that some graphics cards can run pretty hot, but 80C sounds pretty unstable to me still. Then again, I don't monitor my graphics card temp.

Yes, yes it is. Or it very well may be. Mine seems somewhat more stable but still suffers from extreme heat of up to 120C which is about 40 degrees too much. It's definitely a graphics problem for me. My game will run then textures will suddenly change and polygons will appear where they shouldn't.

It's never happened until NWN2 so I reason the graphics are more intense than previous games, so causing my card to work harder. I recently installed Crysis and I have to play it on a setting so low that my eyes bleed.

Funny thing is that nothing is overclocked so it should be stable. Im just resorting to buying a few small fans and placing them in my case. Hopefully I won't need to fork out lots of money for a cooling system. Although Liquid Nitrogen always is fun

Just to update. I've just bought a CoolerMaster CoolViva Z1 and played a few minutes of Crysis. The highest reading I got was under 80 C so I can very much say that I think my problems are solved.... for now

the most i ever got up to was 80 C once, but usually I run in the mid 70's when playing nwn2.

What graphics card do you have? 80c though is actually pretty safe for most graphic cards if it isn't there for HOURS.

Turn up the fan on your graphics card to 100% and see if it keeps happening. Also do you have anything else in any PCI/AGP/PCIx1/8/16 slots?
