If I get afflicted with "Silence" and then equip an item that gives me immunity to silence, will equipping the item dispel the already-applied Silence effect? Or will it only prevent future silencing?

The latter. It's like trying to use Freedom of Movement after getting hit with a Bigby's - it won't work.
