  • A letter to House Locke

The following is delivered to House Lock of Damara, a letter sealed with the wax sigil of a B with a blade through it.

To the parents of Kinson Locke,

It is with great regret and remorse that I deliver this most important news unto you. While in the vale of Sundren, I did have chance to meet you son, Kinson Locke. We met in the city streets on what was thought to be a clear day. He was injured and searching for a young woman he had recently saved from the Bloodmaim, a particularly savage and brutal tribe of orcs which is currently at war with our vale. I treated his wounds and he told me what had happened in brief, that they threatened a particular set of crossroads in our vale which is a center for trade. He joined me immediately and we thought to free our vale of this threat.

Upon our arrival to the area we saw we were vastly outnumbered, but a patrol of our local Legion joined us on the road and we thought to put the blade to this foe, and set things for the right. Alas, fate was against us and the Legionnaires fell, while me and your son were captured. In our captivity he and I had brief chance to speak to one another. He made known of the sins against his brother, and he wanted his father to know that he was right about him in the end. Believe his final words spoken before he died. For part of him did die immediately, with the rest to follow.

An ally made a distraction and I was able to escape, but he would not with, either for knowing his fate already or as I feared, he had given in to the death he thought he had earned. But he attacked the priestess which held us unflinchingly, so as to aid in my escape. I had not gone far when I gathered what aid I could, and we returned to free your son and the crossroads, but was too late, what ere had a hold of his mind was with him still and he would not remain with us.

We continued to battle the Bloodmaim as they arrived in waves, and he would lead us to them, calling and challenging us along the way so as to show their location, and to let us prepare. Believe this was his intent at least, was ne'er able to make it clear. As the last Bloodmaim was struck down he remained, never once raising a blade to us.

We then spoke our last to each other, we tried to understand but I'm not certain I yet do. This letter is written at the conclusion of these events and I've had little time to put a mind to things as I am like to do, to try and understand fully. But I believe he had made his mind to put himself to the blade of a Sword of Torm, as his brother was in life.

He demanded a trial by combat for his percieved actions of siding with the Bloodmaim. The Legionnare, Centurio Emiliana Blackwell, freely granted this and he chose me as the one to grant this judgement upon him. The battle was brief and your son fought bravely and honorably to the end. I did ask that he yield but he refused and thus it ended in his life. I do not send this letter for any forgiveness, I ask none, but so that you might understand your son's final moments. A thousand pardons for the loss to you, and I regret I did not know him better in life, he might have been an ally, in better circumstances.

By the Brave, the Light, and the Three, I wish you peace.
