  • A New Face

The lizard men moved through the northern sewer at pace, tails whipping behind them, spears poised forwards. They were a hunting pack of three, previously four but their scout had disappeared about an hour before.

The pack leader, largest in build, leapt from a set of steps forwards into the water before him. His size and strength allowed him to keep his pace in the water.

The next in line went upwards around the curved wall of the sewer crawling at speed along the ceiling above his leader. The smallest at the rear dived forwards into the water remaining beneath it and flying forwards with whips of his tail swimming beside the leader.

As they reached the end of the tunnel they came across a half opened door. The screams they had heard from far away must have come from here. There was no other avenue in this direction that they hadn’t searched.

Beyond the door was dark, there was no movement and no sound that they could perceive.

The leader poked the door open with his spear and stepped carefully in. He looked around across the room. His companion rose from the water in front of him, an incantation in draconic spoken and an orb of light mustered above his head, illuminating the flooded room.

At first there seemed to be nothing but then they saw it, a sight that horrified.

Before them by the far wall, up on a raised balcony area, stood what looked like a large, deformed and hunch backed lizard man. He stood with his back to them tugging at the skin on his left shoulder from behind his neck with his other arm. The skin slid about on his arm as if loose over the arm within. He stretched out the fingers on his left arm as if to fit the skin better. All that could be heard was the dry shuffle of stretching scales.

Beside the freak, on the floor, lay the skinless muscle, bone and sinew corpse of another lizard man, most likely the scout they had lost before.

The pack leader let out a dry and laboured hiss. The stranger turned slightly now aware of their presence.

    He made, no noise.

To the remaining lizard man not yet in the room, the door slammed shut. He dropped from his perch above the door and pushed at the door trying to open it again.

The door thumped as he tried to open it. He heaved and heaved with all his might. The door opened and closed violently, something heavy kept slamming against it. The sounds of squealing and hissing and roars of beasts emanated from within. Occasionally the door would crackle with ice as the wood became frozen momentarily.

The lizard man kicked and fought to get back inside and finally when all had fallen silent the door began to give way. He pushed forwards opening it against a huge weight. The body of his leader lay against it, within, flopping down across his path as he tried to enter.

His leader’s body was bent and broken, huge wounds crossed his muscles and burns from fire and ice tarnished his skin. Blood spread through the water as his leader's torso sank downwards at the lizard man's feet.

The last of the lizard men looked up and saw the monster lifting his smaller compatriot into the air by his throat, drawing slowly an icicle blade back out from the caster’s stomach. The Lizard whimpered, blood pouring from his mouth as his arms twitched beside him trying to reach for the blade being drawn from him.

The stranger tossed the body aside and turned to look at the last lizard, his face long and unfitting, mouth gawping low and open with what looked like small tusks within. Where his eyes were, the skin was also loose with a grey/blue skin beneath. Bloodshot violet eyes stared back.

As the freak hissed like a lizard man, his eyes flickered, green, the pupils becoming long and lizard like. A forked tongue flickered from his mouth.

The last lizard man slammed the door back shut and backed away, his eyes wide with terror. From behind the door he heard a muffled voice talking in the language of men.

“It okayz, is not worry, I is like youz now.”

    The door began to open.

The lizard man dropped his spear and ran.
