Success! I have met with my first true advancement since I became able to see and deal with the Souls of this plane. The energies of a soul can be pressed to service, if willing, and used to protect. I have formulated a spell that allows me to use the energies of nearby souls to weave a semi-solid field around myself. Its effects are far more impressive than I thought they would be. I was most pleased when testing in the Saharan Hills and finding that the goblins there often were unable to penetrate the field at all, blades stopping inches from my flesh, quarrels slowing and falling from the air before striking me. It is a wonderful advancement; one I should be able to build on in the future.
There are drawbacks, though. The energies become ambient when I employ them to such a use, and the souls are sometimes visible as they move along the weave around me. This has caused some uncomfortable situations, and may conflict with the plans laid forth in my last entry. A second con is the tempurature. I am forced to bundle my robes tightly, as the souls manifest the Chill of Death when they become ambient...its enough to put many bystanders on edge. I, however, can focus that chill into a single ray and strike out at targets. Its effects are not overly impressive, but I find it better to be able to strike at a distance over having a swarm of creatures about my knees in any case. I am now, however, far more hopeful in my progress. I had thought it stalled for the time...perhaps this will help me move forward.

Not all souls seek to aid. Some seek to warp and curse those still in the realm of the Living. Their whispers are dark, twisted, and malicious. Even these souls can be put to use, however, and still serve the purpose that they are bound to in their eternal existance. Using the Soul Net spell, I have been able to direct the anger and malice of these souls onto a target. I was able to test this spell recently on the Chieftain of the goblins, inside his cave to great effect. So many souls of so many who had been viciously cut down sought revenge and seethed with anger. It was a simple task to give them a target and let them whisper their anger into the chieftain's ear. The effect was instant. He begain to falter in his defense, his eyes darting about in fear...so distracted; he was easy pickings for my comrades to bring down...
