  • The Storm

The first brush of rain hit the cobble stones with soft, dusty little pings. Chime tipped her head back, looking up at the dark clouds as a fat drop slid coolly down her cheek. The situation in Sundren city was much like this coming storm she thought. The first drops have touched the land in the form of riots and discontent much as it now fell upon her skin.

The silver haired woman bent her head and looked down for a moment on the individual circles as the light rain made its mark on the cobblestones. It always starts slow she thought and closed her bright green eyes; lifting her face once more to the kiss of the rain. She took a breath, pulling in the scent of ozone and hopelessness that filled the city then opened her eyes once more. Dark clouds filled the sky over head and it wasn’t hard to imagine them as a swirling mass of rage and anger, boiling and writhing above the city. The threat of the coming storm was visible for anyone with eyes to see.

Gemstones caught what little light there was, flicking brightly as she lifted her hand; running it through her slowly damping hair. Usually she enjoyed the rain, but today she simply couldn’t appreciate it properly. It was hard to feel much happiness with the latest gossip flooding the streets of the floating city. She had no idea how the residents of Cheapside were going to take the release of Lord Ashby. The men and woman there has suffered bitterly at the hands of that man. How had he managed to escape the charges of slave trafficking she would never know.

Chime sighed a little and shook her head. Who was she kidding? She knew how he managed to escape, or she suspected she knew some of the reasons he had at any rate. The Legion was marching and it stood to reason that the Emperor was going to need all the nobles he could get to support the change in the status quo both political and financially. She was not entirely certain where Lord Ashby’s support had been before he had been arrested but she knew where it had to be now, at least in public anyway. Lord Ashby was the blackest of sorts but she had seen firsthand what was in his warehouse. She was quite sure he had connections and she suspected they were not just the legal sort either.

The sound of boots on stone made her whirl and look to the right. Quickly she raised one hand in a defensive position, fingers splayed out as the words of a defensive spell hovered on her lips. She met the startled gaze of a young street tough and held very still. She watched the man look her over slowly, and for a moment she wondered if he would actually approach her. Then she saw where his gaze lingered and relaxed. There was nothing to fear here, just a young man admiring a woman he found attractive. She gave the man a slow smile and put a little extra sway in hips as she resumed her walk.

Perhaps she was jumping at shadows. Maybe Lord Ashby wouldn’t remember her. After all, she was only one Legionnaire among hundreds. It stood to reason that he would be very busy with his son’s upcoming nuptials and the day to day operations of his house. If she stayed out of sight for a while, perhaps he would leave well enough alone.

With a crack of thunder and a blinding flash of lighting, the heavens opened up and the fury of the storm hit the city. Chime gave a soft little gasp, instantly soaked to the skin by the deluge. With frantic haste she hiked up her wet skirts and raced for the inn. She really didn’t believe that the man would forget about her, but she hoped. Yes, she very much hoped that he had.
