  • The night the lights went out on Tigen

It had been a long night, but not as long a night as he had feared it would be. Unclasping his cloak, and removing his mask, Kirk tossed them over the arm of the couch as he sat back, before unstrapping his boots. Digging into his satchel, he pulled out a cigar, lighting it from a sliver of wood in the fireplace. The flicker of the fireplace gleamed in his eye, as he reflected that the Tigen problem had reached a solution.

Taking a deep draw on his cigar, Kirk took the time to reflect on Tigen, and his life. Very few had ever proven to be worthy opponents, and the list of those who were still breathing, was getting shorter by the day. Sure, Tigen was a mad elf, but he stood firm in whatever it was he believed, and that was admirable. No one rises to that kind of fame, or infamy without a deep conviction, and Kirk knew all too well that people with conviction was a rarity in Sundren in these times. Kirk took no glee in the fact that Tigen was dead, no, this moment, this cigar was his way of paying his respects to the elf that Tigen was.

Sure, he was brash and bold, far too cocky, but in the end, that was his undoing. Kirk licked his lips at the idea that Tigen had thought he could have others do his bidding by veiled threats and bravado. So confident in his magics, which in the end, failed him. The tactics that the family were developing were working far more effectively that he had first dared to believe. A faint smile crossed his face as he reflected on the unity of teamwork that ultimately was Tigen's undoing, such a relief, especially after all the bickering.

Puffing and enjoying the fire and heat of the fireplace, Kirk's mind wandered back to that fantastic sword. What was that word etched into it, yes... Maelstrom. What a fine piece of craftsmanship. Kirk briefly mourned the loss of the weapon more than most friends he had known. If only it could have been salvaged, but in the end, Nobody was right. Greed can not trump risk. With the ashes spreading out over the valley at the base of the mountains, it was a little late to worry about it anyway.

Before taking the last draw on his cigar, and snuffing it, he thought back to Maia briefly, the wood witch. Oh, these two were definitely in the same category in Kirk's mind. Truly, the list of people who had the perception to detect Kirk, was dwindling. Still, Maia was nowhere near the threat Tigen had proven to be over the years, and that only stood as a testament to Tigen. Maybe Kirk had owed Tigen a little more than this once upon a time.... but those days were over. A new night had fallen over Sundren.
