  • The background of Ian MacLain

The truth is that Ian is a fairly unremarkable person...as much as adventurers can be called unremarkable. No great tragedy or quest drives him. He simply tries to excel as a ranger and a ranger is all he has ever wanted to be.

He is a Moonshaevian and comes from one of the more remote parts of the islands. Ethnically he is about as close to pureblooded ancient Ffolk as is possible these days. His blonde hair is something of an oddity for the Ffolk and is the manifestation of a distant ancestor of elven blood (the family story varies between an Elf and a Half-elf depending who is asked).

Ian comes from a family in an odd position in Moonshaevian society. He is not part of the noble class but is not a commoner. His family, along with two others, provide the rangers who serve as Wardens of their Baron's lands. Unfortunately for Ian, he completed his training at an unfortunate time. There were simply to many Wardens (he's the third son of the current Master of Wardens and the other families each provide at least two Wardens) and not enough duties. After becoming a Warden and participating in the removal of a goblin tribe on the Baron's land he was given leave of his duties. Knowing that in the event of the untimely death of a Warden or the retirement of one of the older Wardens Ian would be recalled, his father suggested that instead of sitting idle Ian should take up adventuring.

Ian's wanderings have taken him to the Mainland and eventually to Sundren. Sundren suits Ian well with it's variety of challenges. In his wanderings he has been exposed to many things including the Church of Selune. He has given up the worship of the Earthmother in favor of Selune. Ian is something of a loner, preferring to wander the wilds alone and making few friends. He has a strong drive to "do what is right" regardless of whether it is legal or not. However, he appreciates order and sound governance just as much. He is not a particularly greedy sort of person and is apt to spend his gold on practical things rather than hording it. He does have a weakness for gems of all sorts though. Confronted with the choice of an extremely fine gem or a magic sword he'd have a hard time choosing!

The defining moments of his career as a ranger have been the assualt on the goblins in his home Barony and his encounter with a Ghost near Sestra soon after his arrival in Sundren. He is a skilled archer by training and favors a greatsword for close combat.
