  • Something I came across.

Still waiting on my copy of Nwn2 to be here... searching the web I found something interesting I thought I would share with the rest of you, for all it's worth. ^^ Also, I wasn't sure as to where I should post this in the first place... however in my mind this seemed to be the safest place as to not receive any scrutiny from people in which the topic is relative to, or cause more work for the already busy DM's and system Admins to move posts around.

It mostly pertains to when you are role-playing. To clarify:

Role-playing refers to the changing of one's behavior to assume a role, either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted role.

When we do role-play, we must always keep in mind of the other variables within our environment. The world we live in normally is robust with light, sound, color, temperature and we always adjust accordingly sometimes even unconsciously. Characters are telling a story to eachother, and can use emotes to inact basic actions as well as complex ones to allow the content of the story to be more rich than it was previously. Also while role-playing one may take on a variety of positions, perhaps even simultaneously as Characters within the world they belong to.

A fictional character is any person, persona, identity, or entity that originated in a work of art. Along with plot, setting, theme, and style, character is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction.Characters may be entirely fictional, or they may be based upon real entities, contemporary or historical.

A dynamic character is one who, during the course of the story, changes significantly. Significant changes might include changes in insight or understanding, changes in commitment, or changes in values. Changes in circumstance, even physical circumstance, would not qualify unless they result in some change within the character's self.

In the setting we all play in 90% of us are considered dynamic characters, however it is fun to play a static character every now and then, to think of an example... Before Nwn, or WoW. There were AOL chatrooms converted into an RP world, and lots of people took it upon themselves to act even as Bartenders, Bouncers, regular people who performed services. ---I mention this because even in DM'd events every player who is participating takes on a roll within the event, sometimes even switching between or through various different roles. The main aspect of this that you should take to heart is to not feel less important when you are not the current focus of the event, or conversation. And even as a DM it is sometimes considered more than easy to forget about things, or consider the depth of a players sensitivity.

In role playing games, a player typically creates or takes on the identity of a character that may have nothing in common with the player. The character is usually of a certain race and class (such as warrior or magic user), each with strengths and weaknesses. The attributes of the characters (such as magic and fighting ability) are given as numerical values which can be increased as the gamer progresses and gains rank and experience points through accomplishing goals or fighting enemies.

I myself as a player find it important to role-play my stat rolls. It creates another dynamic that makes things more interesting... and some people frown upon role-playing that you are the healthiest strongest smartest wisest most agile and attractive person. So I would take that into consideration as well when considering a character path during creation or conversational role-play.

The thoughts and points are random and jumbled... but it's almost 4am! Thought I'd share. ^^
