  • Starting Languages

Starting languages on Sundren are extremely limited. Elves and Dwarves only get 6 choices, meaning if you were an Elf with Int 20 you would know exactly the same languages as every other Elf with Int 20, which doesn't seem very believable or conducive to RP.

I'd suggest opening it up a bit. I'm not suggesting allowing the exotic languages like Abyssal to be learnt by all, but at least the languages of the 'goodly' races Dwarven, Elven, Halfling & Gnome be available to all.

I've seen on some servers they allow you to start at level 1 knowing Abyssal, Infernal, Celestial, Draconic and Ancient Netherese already. I don't think that is really necessary but maybe there's a middle ground?

Everyone should know Abyssal. It will make your coming subjugation more pleasant. Suggestion noted.

IIRC, classes unlock more languages. Wizards and arcane asters I think can start with planar languages, and clerics can get celestial, infernal, abyssal, etc.

I didn't realize that! That makes sense and it isn't as bad as I thought. Then only Wizards of the same race will all know the same languages etc. I still think it'd be nice to include all intelligent races for more variety.

Also could change the name of Decipher Script to Linguistics and have it grant a bonus language for every 2 points or somesuch (in PnP it's one bonus language per point but that seems excessive)

Decipher Script is actually a skill with mechanical use in the crafting system, as it is used to decrypt Cryptic Notes that are located as monster drops.

These are the Forgotten Realms starting bonus languages for Elf/Dwarf. Would really be awesome if we could get these in game. I think it would make the subraces somewhat more distinct.

            Moon Elves
Automatic Languages: Elven, Common, home region. Bonus Languages: Auran, Chondathan, Gnoll, Gnome, Halfling, Illuskan, Sylvan.

            Sun Elves
Automatic Languages: Elven, Common, home region. Bonus Languages: Auran, Celestial, Chondathan, Gnome, Halfling, Illuskan, Sylvan.

            Wild Elves
Automatic Languages: Elven, Common, home region. Bonus Languages: Gnoll, Illuskan, Orc, Sylvan, Tashalan.

            Wood Elves
Automatic Languages: Elven, Common, home region. Bonus Languages: Chondathan, Draconic, Gnome, Goblin, Gnoll, Sylvan.

            Gold Dwarves
Automatic Languages: Dwarven, Common, home region.
Bonus Languages: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Shaaran, Terran, Untheric.

            Shield Dwarves
Automatic Languages: Dwarven, Common, home region.
Bonus Languages: Chondathan, Draconic, Giant, Goblin, Illuskan, Orc.

And yes Kit I realize Decipher Script already has a use in game. I was mainly suggesting changing its name to Linguistics, since that's the Pathfinder skill with the same function (plus more).
